Preparing for Your Immigration Medical Exam: A Complete Checklist for Newcomers to Toronto
For many individuals aspiring to start a new chapter in Canada—whether as students, workers, or permanent residents—the Medical Exam for Canada Immigration is a fundamental requirement.
This assessment ensures that newcomers meet the health standards required by Canadian authorities. Understanding the intricacies of this process is essential for a seamless transition and successful application.
This article provides a comprehensive checklist for those preparing for the Immigration Medical Exam in Toronto, offering clarity and guidance every step of the way.
Eligibility for the Immigration Medical Exam
The Immigration Medical Exam (IME) is a requisite for most applicants pursuing Canadian permanent residency and many others who wish to visit, study, or work in Canada beyond six months.
Applicants should always check with Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) whether they need an immigration medical exam. Whether it is applying for Permanent residency, Family Sponsorship, Refugee Claim, Student visa, or Work Permit, an immigration medical exam may be required.
In some application types, you are eligible to do an Upfront Medical Exam or an immigration medical exam before applying to IRCC in order to prepare for your application.
Where to Schedule Your Immigration Medical Exam
You must contact a Panel Physician directly to book your IME. Several locations throughout the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) are available, including Toronto, Brampton, Scarborough, North York, and Oakville. Ensure you book your appointment with an approved Panel Physician to guarantee your exam is valid.
Preparing for the Exam: What to Bring
To facilitate a smooth IME session, you must bring several essential items:
- A government-issued photo ID with a signature (for example, a passport);
- A comprehensive list of current medications;
- Relevant medical reports and test results for existing or previous conditions;
- Prescription glasses, contact lenses, or other vision aids.
If your application does not require an upfront medical exam, the Government of Canada will provide the necessary forms, such as IMM1017E. Our office is eMedical enabled and no passport photos are required prior to coming for your appointment.
What to Expect During Your Immigration Medical Exam
Identification Verification
Upon arrival, present a government-issued ID with a photo and signature, such as a passport, driver’s license or national identity card. A photograph will also be taken for your eMedical profile.
Medical History Questionnaire
The Panel Physician will inquire about your medical history, including any medications you currently take. Bring your medications and relevant medical records to your appointment.
Physical Examination
The physical exam includes:
- Measurement of weight and height
- Hearing and vision tests
- Blood pressure check
- Heart and lung auscultation
- Abdominal examination
- Limb movement assessment
- Skin condition check
These noninvasive tests ensure a comprehensive health assessment. Note that genital and rectal exams are not part of this process.
Mental Status Examination
Applicants over 75 or those with certain medical conditions may undergo a mental status examination. This assessment is not an IQ test and requires no special preparation.
Additional Tests
Depending on your age and health status, further tests may be required:
- Chest X-rays: Mandatory for applicants over 11 years old;
- Urinalysis: For applicants over 5 years old;
- Creatinine test: For applicants over 15 years old or with kidney disease;
- Syphilis and HIV tests: For applicants over 15 years old.
These tests do not require fasting; you can maintain your regular diet and hydration.
Financial Considerations: Covering the Costs
The cost of an IME can vary, encompassing fees for the medical examination, additional tests or treatments, and consultations with specialists if necessary. Ensure you are prepared to cover these expenses on the day of your examination to prevent any delays in your application process.
Please review pricing for your medical exam here. Applicants with valid Interim Federal Health coverage do not need to pay.
Duration of the Immigration Medical Exam
Expect your IME to last between 30 minutes to 2 hours, depending on additional required tests. Unlike some clinics, all tests like chest x-ray, blood test, and urine test are conducted onsite at our clinic.
If You Miss Your Appointment
Should you miss your scheduled IME appointment, it is vital to contact your Panel Physician immediately to reschedule, as delays can affect the processing of your immigration application.
Bringing a Chaperone
You are allowed to bring a chaperone to your IME for comfort and support. This can be someone you choose, or a staff member provided by the clinic.
Next Steps After the Immigration Medical Exam
After completing your IME, submit all required documents and information for your immigration application and await further instructions. Stay responsive to any additional requests from Canadian immigration authorities, and communicate with your Panel Physician for updates or concerns regarding your application or health assessment results.
By understanding and preparing for each aspect of the Immigration Medical Exam, you ensure that you confidently navigate this essential step toward your new life in Canada.
