The immigration medical exam in one trip

Coming in from Scarborough, you make the trip once. The laboratory and the X-ray suite are inside the clinic, so there are no requisitions to carry to an outside lab and no second appointment across town. You arrive, complete every component, and go home.

The tests themselves are specific. Bloodwork screens for conditions such as HIV and syphilis and checks kidney function through serum creatinine. The chest X-ray screens for tuberculosis — a condition that can develop without symptoms. Your panel physician reviews everything as part of the exam.

If a component has to wait — a deferral is sometimes the right choice — the follow-up is scheduled before you leave, and we submit the completed results afterward.

What happens at your appointment

Arrive 10 to 15 minutes early and drink some fluids beforehand — it makes the bloodwork easier. Applicants 15 and under must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian, and any patient may request a chaperone.

Preparing for your immigration medical exam

A few minutes of preparation at home in Scarborough keeps the visit short.

No IRCC paperwork yet? That's common — you can complete an upfront medical exam before you submit your application. Bring your ID and the clinic handles the paperwork.

• Government-issued ID — a passport is ideal.
• Your IRCC medical report form (IMM 1017) if you received one, and any other IRCC correspondence.
• Your Express Entry invitation letter, if you have one.
• Glasses, contact lenses or hearing aids, if you use them.
• Current medications in their original packaging, plus any specialist reports for pre-existing conditions.
• For refugee claimants — your Acknowledgement of Claim letter or Interim Federal Health Certificate.

What an IRCC panel physician is

An immigration medical exam can only be completed by a panel physician — a doctor designated by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. Your family doctor cannot perform the IME, however complete their records. The physicians at both of our clinics hold this designation.
